BOIC

Cynthia Bolingo, Anne Zagré, Julien Watrin, Nina Derwael, Charline Van Snick, Felix Denayer, Greg Van Avermaet, Emma Plasschaert, Jaouad Achab, Simon Gougnard, Kyara Linskens, Marjorie Carpréaux, Roger Habsch, Gitte Haenen en Bruno Vanhove

The 2021 Olympic and Paralympic Qualification Regattas - Update as of 6 October 2020

In light of the evolving impact on the ability to stage events due to of the COVID-19 pandemic, the following is an update on the situation of the remaining qualifying opportunities for the Tokyo 2021 Olympic and Paralympic Games (now taking place in July/August 2021), as well as the relevant qualification systems.

FISA is advancing with discussions with the selected organising committees and Member Federations and through them, the relevant national governments and health authorities with the goal to stage the Americas and the Asia & Oceania Continental Olympic and Paralympic Qualification Regattas in early 2021.

Alternative scenarios are also being examined if these Continental Qualification events are not able to take place as planned, and this will be communicated when we have more information throughout October.

  1. Americas Continental Olympic and Paralympic Qualification Regatta

The Americas Continental Olympic and Paralympic Qualification Regatta is planned to be hosted in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from the 28 to 31 January 2021. The next decision date on the event will be communicated on 28 October 2020.  No pre-regatta training camp will take place if this event goes ahead.  The Brazilian Rowing Confederation, with the support of the Brazilian government, and in collaboration with FISA, is working towards these dates to host the event.  A questionnaire will be circulated to teams in the Americas to review the overall situation in coming days.

  1. Asia and Oceania Continental Olympic and Paralympic Qualification Regatta

As previously communicated, the Asia and Oceania Continental Olympic and Paralympic Qualification Regatta can no longer take place in Chungju, Korea due to the effects of COVID-19. Discussions are taking place to confirm another venue and the dates of this regatta. The next update on establishing a venue and dates for this regatta is planned for after 15 October 2020. A pre-regatta training camp will not take place.

As previously communicated, there are no changes to the plans for the following events:

  1. European Continental Olympic and Paralympic Qualification Regatta

The European Continental Olympic and Paralympic Qualification Regatta will take place in Varese, Italy from 5 to 7 April 2021.

  1. Final Paralympic Qualification Regatta

The Final Paralympic Qualification Regatta will take place in Gavirate, Italy from 7 to 9 May 2021.

  1. Final Olympic Qualification Regatta

The Final Olympic Qualification Regatta, scheduled to take place in May 2020, is now confirmed to take place in Lucerne, Switzerland from 16 to 18 May 2021.

      COVID-19 Planning and Hygiene Measures

Consultations are continuing on a regular basis to review the situations of the OC and member federations with regards to COVID-19 and national health authorities policies for prevention measures, training situations, travel restrictions, and other considerations.

Additionally, World Rowing is working with the organising committees, local health authorities and the national Olympic committee medical officers to put in place appropriate measures to minimise the risk of transmission or infection for all participants at the events. The organising committees will develop a specific COVID-19 response plan, based on the latest guidance and recommendations from their local health authorities, the World Health Organisation guidelines and World Rowing’s “Return to Regattas” Guidance

The FISA Sports Medicine Commission will be revising in coming weeks after the European events, a set of updated guidelines in a simple format that will be presented to member federations to be sure they have understand and can follow these important measures.  These will be reviewed and revisited as we get closer to the events given the rapidly changing situation.

There are no other changes to the information on Qualification communicated on 28 July 2020 found at this link: http://www.worldrowing.com/news/rowing-updates-tokyo-2020-olympic-and-paralympic-qualification
